Whether you’re the MD, Operations Director, or any other role in a business, we all have our part to play in cybersecurity. You might feel that you keep yourself safe when at the office or are working but are you sure you’re not the weakest link in your cybersecurity?
1. Do you have an easy-to-guess password?
If your password contains any memorable information about yourself such as your name or your date of birth then it might be easy to guess. Or if you’re using ‘Password’ or ‘12345’ then we’re afraid you might be the weakest link in your cybersecurity.
2. Do you open everything on all emails?
And do you open all your emails? If you answer yes to either of those then this is another potential risk factor to your business. While most email systems will filter junk mail and ask whether you ‘trust content’ if you’ve tweaked any settings without realising you might not be as protected as you think. Stopping before opening unknown emails or double-checking any attachments that have unusual names can help you reduce your risk of a cyber attack.
3. Do you leave your laptop unlocked when you step away from it?
Or are any of your devices easy to open and out of your sight? If you work in a large organisation, you might not always be aware of everyone coming into your building that poses a risk. If you work remotely at times and step away to order a coffee and leave your laptop unlocked you are introducing a potential risk. A simple CTRL+ALT+DEL when you leave your device is good practice to keep your business information secure.
4. Do you think cybersecurity training is a waste of time?
The biggest cyber risk to your business is human error. We can all make mistakes after all. But providing cyber security training for your team can help reduce this risk. 5. Do you keep putting off planning your cyber security?
CyberEssentials is a framework to help businesses plan and manage their cyber security. And as less than 10% of UK businesses hold a CyberEssentials certificate it can be a key difference to put you ahead of the competition.
What to do if you answered yes to any of the above?
If you answered yes to any of the above then you might be the biggest cybersecurity risk to your business. Now, we know we are being a little tongue-in-cheek with phrasing all these questions as yes or no but the cyber threats are still there. And while it can seem like IT companies are scare-mongering the risks are real. But most importantly they can be mitigated against.
